Description
Background

Hygrophila corymbosa, commonly sold as Siamensis or Stricta, is a classic background stem plant known for its hardiness and rapid growth. Broad green leaves and upright stems make it an ideal choice for filling space in medium to large aquariums.

Under moderate lighting, it grows steadily with vibrant green foliage. Increased light may introduce subtle bronze tones. Unlike demanding red species, it tolerates a wide range of parameters and does not strictly require CO₂, making it suitable for beginners and low-tech setups.

Compared to Hygrophila angustifolia, corymbosa features much broader leaves and a heavier visual presence. It grows faster than most Alternanthera varieties and can quickly stabilise nutrient imbalances in newly established tanks.

Directions

Plant the stems in a bunch into the substrate. Once established, the plant will grow outwards quickly. This plant can tolerate some shading, and is flexible in terms of placement. A steady source of light and nutrients will be sufficient to grow it well. Higher light will bring out more red colouration.

To propagate, cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots readily.
