Description
Background

Nymphaea rubra, commonly known as the Red Tiger Lotus, is one of the most eye-catching centrepiece plants used in planted aquariums. Its large, rounded leaves range from deep red to burgundy and often display darker spotting. The plant grows from a bulb and produces broad leaves that spread outward.

Usually positioned in the midground or background, depending on tank size. Under favourable conditions it can send long stems towards the surface where floating leaves may form. Many aquascapers trim these surface shoots to encourage more compact submerged growth, keeping the plant bushier.

Although relatively forgiving, stronger lighting and nutrient-rich substrate will significantly improve leaf colour and growth. Like many bulb plants, it benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs since it feeds heavily through its roots.

Directions

Plant half of the bulb into the substrate. Avoid burying too deep to avoid bulb rot. Try to choose a permanent placement for the plant, frequent relocation will slow down plant development. Several plants will grow from the bulb at the base, which can be separated and replanted when large enough.

Bright light will enhance its growth and boost the red colouration. Root tabs and good fertilisation will support healthy growth of plant.
