Description
Background

Hygrophila angustifolia ‘Rubra’ is a tall, narrow-leaved stem plant that develops bronze to reddish tones under stronger lighting. Its long, slender leaves create vertical movement in the background of planted aquariums. Unlike more compact red stems such as Alternanthera, Hygrophila angustifolia grows vigorously and adapts readily to a range of conditions.

It grows well in low to medium light and is highly adaptable, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. CO₂ is not essential but will promote denser growth and healthier foliage. As a water column feeder, it responds well to regular liquid fertilisation. Hygrophila angustifolia ‘Rubra’ works particularly well in larger aquariums where its height can be utilised to frame the layout.

Directions

Plant the stems in a bunch into the substrate. Once established, the plant will grow outwards quickly. This plant can tolerate some shading, and is flexible in terms of placement. A steady source of light and nutrients will be sufficient to grow it well. Higher light will bring out more red colouration.

To propagate, cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots readily.
