Anubias heterophylla - Plant

Anubias heterophylla is a large-growing Anubias species known for its elongated green leaves and impressive size. Developing considerably larger than familiar varieties such as Anubias nana, it is particularly well suited to larger aquariums where its substantial foliage can provide structure and height.

The plant grows from a thick creeping rhizome, producing long-stemmed leaves that can vary considerably in shape. Mature foliage is typically elongated and lance-shaped, with fresh green to deeper green colouration depending on growing conditions.

Like most Anubias, heterophylla is hardy, slow growing and tolerant of lower lighting conditions. It does not require injected CO₂ and can adapt to a wide range of aquarium conditions, although stable nutrients and CO₂ can encourage stronger growth. Because of its eventual size, careful positioning is important to prevent mature leaves from shading smaller plants.

Attach the plant to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks or plant in substrate, allowing the rhizome to be exposed to flowing water. This plant is well-suited for low-light set ups and does not mind being shaded by other plants. Due to the size of the plant, it can often breach the water surface and grow partially above water.

To propagate, cut the rhizome with at least three leaves, and plant or reattach to hardscape.
