Description
Background

Lobelia cardinalis, also known as the cardinal flower, is a classic aquarium plant that originates from North America. While it grows tall and produces vivid red flowers in its emersed form, underwater it develops compact growth with rounded, bright green leaves, sometimes tinged with red or purple under strong light. This dual nature makes it a favorite for both planted aquariums and paludariums, where its adaptability and unique foliage texture provide excellent contrast.

Lobelia cardinalis is highly versatile, serving as a foreground accent or midground filler. Its rounded leaves and bright tones contrast well with fine-leaved stems and carpets, making it a classic for streets in Dutch-style and midground in Nature-style layouts.

Directions

Plant the stems in small groups to create a bushy effect in the tank. Good light and stable CO₂ promotes compact growth. Cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots readily. Regular trimming keeps growth low and compact.
