Description
Background

Ludwigia senegalensis is a highly distinctive and sought-after stem plant, best known for its unusual leaf patterning. Its leaves display a striking mix of red, olive, and green tones, often with intricate vein-like markings that set it apart from almost all other aquarium plants. Each leaf develops unique patterns that become more pronounced under strong lighting, giving the plant a decorative, almost ornamental quality within an aquascape.

The plant grows with upright stems and moderately spaced leaves, making it well suited for midground or background placement. It tends to grow at a moderate pace once established. Strong lighting is essential to bring out the best colour and patterning, while CO₂ injection and regular fertilisation will significantly improve overall health and growth. Without optimal conditions, the plant may be prone to stunting.

Directions

Plant individual stems into a nutrient-rich substrate using tweezers, spacing them slightly apart to allow light to reach lower leaves. Position in the midground or background depending on aquarium layout. Provide strong lighting, and recommend CO₂ injection, and consistent fertilisation to maintain vibrant colour and patterning.

Cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots readily. Regular topping and replanting maintains bushy form and prevents legginess.
