Description
Background

Potamogeton octandrus ‘Red’ is a distinctive and relatively uncommon aquarium plant. It produces narrow, elongated leaves along thin upright stems. Under favourable conditions the foliage develops reddish, bronze, or orange tones, especially towards the upper portions of the plant where lighting is strongest. Unlike many traditional stem plants, this species has a more natural, slightly wild growth habit.

Growth is generally moderate to fast once the plant has settled into stable conditions. While it can adapt to a range of planted aquarium setups, stronger lighting and the addition of CO₂ will significantly enhance both growth rate and colour intensity. Nutrient-rich water and substrate also help maintain healthy stems and prevent pale foliage.

When used in groups, Potamogeton octandrus ‘Red’ creates a soft, flowing background that adds movement and subtle colour variation to planted aquariums, making it a great alternative to more commonly seen red stems.

Directions

Plant individual stems into substrate, inserting several centimetres deep to secure them. Stems can be bunched together, this plant will space itself naturally. Position the plant in the background with room to grow taller. Provide moderate to strong lighting and regular fertilisation for best colour development. CO₂ injection is beneficial and helps maintain steady growth.

Trim tops frequently and replant healthy cuttings to create fuller groups.
