Description
Background

Rotala ‘Myanmar’ is a very recent addition in the hobby, and part of the Rotala family with slender leaves, orange-red colouration, and elegant flowing pattern. Originating from Myanmar, this species has become increasingly popular in aquascaping for its natural texture and ability to create depth and movement within planted layouts. Under strong lighting and stable conditions, the upper growth develops warm shades of pink, peach, orange, and red, especially around the tips.

Unlike denser Rotala species, ‘Myanmar’ has a lighter and more open growth pattern that gives aquascapes a softer appearance. It also has 3 leaves per node that alternate, which is uncommon amongst Rotala. Its leaves grow in a cupped rosette fashion, and creates a beautiful display especially when viewed from above.

Strong lighting and consistent nutrient availability are important for maintaining compact growth and vibrant colouration. Without sufficient light, stems may become greener and more elongated. Regular trimming encourages denser side shoots and fuller bushes over time, allowing the plant to develop impressive layered groups in larger aquascapes.

Directions

Plant the stems in substrate but with enough distance between plants to allow the plant to grow without shading each other. High light, rich and stable nutrients and CO2 will enhance its pink and red tones.

Cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots. Cutting will also promote more vigorous growth.
