Description
Background

Marimo Moss Balls (Aegagropila linnaei) are one of the most recognisable and beginner-friendly additions to aquariums. Despite the common name, they are not actually moss but a rare form of filamentous green algae naturally shaped into soft spherical forms by gentle water movement.

Exceptionally hardy and undemanding, they tolerate a wide range of water conditions and require very little maintenance. They grow slowly under low to medium lighting and do not require specialised fertilisation or CO₂ injection.

Their deep green colour pairs naturally with stones, driftwood, and minimalist aquascapes. While growth is extremely slow, healthy specimens gradually become denser and richer in colour over time. Occasional rolling during maintenance helps them retain their rounded form and prevents flat spots from developing.

Directions

Place Marimo Moss Balls gently onto the aquarium substrate or between hardscape where they receive low to moderate indirect lighting. Avoid intense direct light, as excessive exposure can encourage nuisance algae growth on the surface.

Rotate occasionally so all sides receive light evenly. No substrate, CO₂, or specialised fertilisation is required, making them ideal for low-maintenance aquariums, shrimp tanks, and beginner setups.
