Description
Background

Bacopa monnieri is a hardy and versatile aquarium stem plant known for its thick upright stems and rounded bright green leaves. Its simple but attractive appearance makes it a popular choice for beginner aquariums, nature-style aquascapes, and low-maintenance planted tanks.

Compared to finer stem plants such as Rotala or Myriophyllum, Bacopa monnieri has thicker and shorter leaves. It is also far more forgiving than many delicate stem species, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and lower lighting levels. Under stronger lighting, the leaves can develop lighter green or slightly bronze tones while maintaining compact growth.

Bacopa monnieri grows vertically and absorbs most nutrients from the water column. It responds well to regular trimming, with cut tops easily replanted to create dense bushes or background groups.

Directions

Plant individual stems into nutrient-rich substrate with small spacing between each stem to allow light penetration and water flow. Avoid planting stems too densely at first.

Medium to high lighting is recommended, alongside regular fertilisation and stable CO₂ injection for best colour and compact growth. Trim frequently to encourage bushier growth and replant healthy tops as needed.
