Description
Background

Cryptocoryne nurii is an uncommon species native to Malaysia’s southern Peninsular streams. It inhabits clear, soft-water rivers with sandy or gravelly substrates. Unlike more uniform crypts, C. nurii is highly variable, with leaves ranging from deep olive-green to reddish-bronze. Many forms display delicate pinkish to red venation, while some show mottled or marbled markings that shimmer under aquarium lighting.

The natural variability makes it one of the most decorative crypts, sought after by aquascapers for its exotic, patterned contrasts. Ideal as a midground focal point in Nature and jungle style layouts that pairs perfectly with fine leaved stems and green plants.

Like most Cryptocoryne species, C. nurii is primarily a root feeder and performs best in nutrient-rich substrate or with regular root tab supplementation. It grows steadily rather than quickly and appreciates stable water conditions. While CO₂ is not essential, injected CO₂ and regular fertilisation will encourage healthier growth, stronger colours, and more compact leaf development.

Directions

Plant Cryptocoryne nurii directly into nutrient-rich substrate, ensuring the roots are buried while keeping the crown above substrate level. Place the plant in the foreground or midground with enough room for the leaves to spread naturally. Low to medium lighting is usually sufficient, though stronger lighting can improve colour and texture. CO₂ is optional but beneficial for stronger growth and healthier leaves.

Avoid moving the plant once established and supplement with root tabs regularly if using inert substrate. Remove melted leaves if necessary and allow time for new submerged growth to develop.
