Description
Background

Echinodorus opacus 'Iguazu 2009' is a rare and iconic Amazon sword plant that has been in the hobby for many years. It has textured leaves in deep green tones with darker veins and subtle bronze hues under stronger lighting. It grows in a compact rosette form and stays much smaller than traditional Amazon swords, making it ideal for midground placement in planted aquariums.

Compared to larger species such as Echinodorus 'Red Diamond' or 'Ocelot Green', 'Iguazu 2009' is shorter and stays compact. It grows thicker and darker leaves, making it very unique amongst Swords.

This plant is best suited to nutrient-rich substrate as it is a strong root feeder. Aquasoil or regular root tab supplementation will help support healthy growth and maintain good leaf colour. Low lighting is usually enough, though stronger lighting can bring out darker tones and improve overall density. While CO2 is not essential, it will encourage faster growth and more compact leaf formation.

Directions

Plant directly into substrate with the roots fully buried while keeping the crown just above substrate level. Nutrient-rich aquasoil is ideal, though sand or gravel can also be used with regular root tabs.

Position it in the midground or background depending on aquarium size, allowing enough room for the leaves to spread. Remove any damaged outer leaves before planting and maintain stable fertiliser and water conditions while the plant establishes.
