Description
Background

Persicaria praetermissa is an attractive and somewhat uncommon stem plant that has gained popularity among aquascapers for its vibrant red tones and elegant leaf shape. Native to Southeast Asia, this species produces elongated leaves with colours ranging from pinkish red to deep crimson when grown under favourable conditions.

Compared to popular red stems such as Rotala rotundifolia or Ludwigia repens, Persicaria praetermissa produces broader leaves and deeper reds when provided with adequate lighting. While it can tolerate moderate conditions, stronger lighting and CO₂ injection significantly enhance its colouration and growth rate.

It typically grows outwards in a creeping fashion with moderate spacing between leaves, giving it a slightly open and natural appearance compared to dense stem plants. This makes it particularly useful for adding contrast and structure in the midground or background of an aquascape.

Directions

Separate stems and plant them individually into substrate, spacing them a few centimetres apart to allow room for growth. Use aquascaping tweezers to insert the stems several centimetres into the substrate so they remain secure.

The plant grows relatively quickly once established and responds well to regular trimming. Like most stem plants, cutting the tops and replanting them encourages bushier growth and fuller groups.

Cut healthy tops and replant to propagate.
