Description
Background

Bucephalandra ‘Ghost’ is a distinctive aquarium plant that displays great purple colouration when grown underwater. It features long leaves with wavy edges, and a unique appearance which makes it a highly desirable collector's plant and a standout feature in premium aquascapes.

Like other Bucephalandra species, ‘Ghost’ grows from a creeping rhizome and naturally inhabits rocks and wood along fast-flowing streams in Borneo. Growth is relatively slow, but each new leaf emerges with exceptional character and colour. Depending on lighting, water chemistry, and maturity, leaves will develop an iridescent sheen.

The plant thrives in stable aquariums and low-tech setups, although stronger lighting, good fertilisation, and stable CO₂ often improve leaf quality and encourage more pronounced colouration.

For collectors and aquascapers seeking something genuinely different, Bucephalandra ‘Ghost’ remains one of the most unique and desirable epiphytes available.

Directions

Attach bucephalandra to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue. Do not bury the rhizome in substrate, as this can cause rot.

Provide low to moderate lighting and stable water conditions. CO₂ injection is optional but can improve growth rate and leaf quality. Avoid sudden parameter changes and minimise algae growth on the leaves, as the plant grows slowly. Remove older leaves as required and allow the rhizome to spread naturally over hardscape surfaces.
