Description
Background

Bucephalandra 'Helena 12' is a timeless species of high-grade aquarium plant that has been in the hobby since 2012. With a unique green-blue sheen, it has stayed popular in Asia with aquarists. It has larger leaves with slightly crinkled edges.

High-grade Bucephalandra are extremely rare in the hobby and not readily available. Grading is based on size, structure, leaf shape, leaf veins and colouration. 'Helena 12' has beautiful rounded leaves with velvet blue/green colour and purple undertones. It grows densely and creates fuller looking bushes.

It is typically place in the foreground to create a striking focal point but can also be attached to hardscape. Excellent in Nature-style, jungle-inspired, or paludarium layouts on wood or rock anchors.

Directions

Plant in substrate or attach the plant to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks, allowing the rhizome to be exposed to flowing water. This plant is well-suited for low-tech set ups, but an RGB light will dramatically help to bring out colouration of the leaves.

A good balance of light and nutrients is important to control algae growth on this plant. Bucephalandra prefer lower fertilisation levels, as they are susceptible to over-fertilisation. They also prefer lower levels of light. CO2 injection is not essential but will help promote growth and health.

To propagate, cut the rhizome with at least three leaves and replant.
