Description
Background

Cryptocoryne affinis 'Red' is a species with elongated leaves that range from brown to reddish tones under stable conditions. It is a hardy plant that adapts well to low and medium light aquariums. Like most Cryptocoryne, it grows as a rosette plant rooted in the substrate. Growth is slow but once established, it forms a dense clump and requires very little maintenance.

Compared to Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Brown', affinis red has longer, narrower leaves and a more upright growth habit. When compared to Cryptocoryne undulatus 'Red', it generally remains more compact and slower growing.

Low to medium lighting is sufficient. CO₂ is not required, though it can improve leaf size and colour depth. As with most Cryptocoryne species, some leaf melt may occur when first introduced, but new growth usually follows once the plant adapts.

Directions

Plant the crypt directly into the substrate. They can be planted closely to form a bush. Cryptocorynes can go through a melt phase while converting from emerged plant. Roots can be trimmed shorter too for ease of planting.

Moderate lighting and CO₂ greatly enhances the growth. It is a heavy root feeder, so root tabs or rich aquasoil is helpful for stronger growth. It spreads via runners, and can be split and replanted when a dense clump has formed.
