Description
Background

Echinodorus major, also widely known as Echinodorus martii, is a magnificent Amazon sword plant with ribbon leaves. Unlike many compact Echinodorus species, Echinodorus major produces long, slightly undulating leaves that can reach the water surface in larger aquariums.

Compared to Echinodorus grisebachii (Amazon Sword), Echinodorus major generally develops narrower, more elongated leaves. It is less bulky than some traditional Amazon Swords but often grows taller, making it particularly effective for background placement.

As a heavy root feeder, Echinodorus major benefits greatly from nutrient-rich substrates and regular root fertilisation. While it can thrive without CO₂ injection, additional carbon dioxide encourages faster growth, larger leaves, and stronger overall health.

Directions

Plant directly into a nutrient-rich substrate, ensuring the crown remains above the substrate surface to prevent rot. Provide low to moderate lighting, although stronger lighting can encourage faster growth.

Supplement with root tabs regularly, as the plant feeds primarily through its roots. CO₂ injection is optional but can improve growth rate and overall vigour. Remove older outer leaves as they age to encourage fresh growth from the centre.
