Description
Background

Egeria densa, commonly sold as Elodea or Anacharis, is a classic aquarium plant recognised for its rapid growth, dense green foliage and exceptional ease of care. Its long stems are covered with closely spaced whorls of narrow leaves, creating a lush appearance that provides excellent cover for fish, shrimp and fry.

This adaptable species can either be planted into the substrate or allowed to grow freely in the water column. Once established, stems can grow rapidly towards the surface and develop numerous side shoots, allowing a small group to quickly become a substantial mass of vegetation. Its fast growth also means it readily takes up nutrients from the water, making it particularly useful in newly established aquariums and simple low-tech setups.

Egeria densa is highly undemanding and grows successfully under relatively modest lighting without injected CO₂. Moderate lighting and regular nutrient availability will produce stronger, denser growth, although excessive fertilisation or specialist equipment is unnecessary for most aquariums.

Directions

Plant individual Egeria densa stems directly into the substrate, leaving space between them for light and water circulation, or simply allow the stems to float freely.

Low to moderate lighting is sufficient, and CO₂ injection is not required. Regular liquid fertilisation can support stronger growth but is generally straightforward to manage. Trim stems once they become too tall or begin spreading across the surface. Healthy cut tops can be replanted to produce new plants and create denser groups.
