Description
Background

Eriocaulon quinquangulare originates from India and is a rare, striking aquatic plant recognised for its narrow red and green blade-like leaves. It grows in a compact rosette form from a central crown and has been popularised by experienced aquascapers, where it is often used as a distinctive focal plant.

This is a demanding species that requires high light levels and consistent CO₂ injection to thrive. Like most Eriocaulons, it prefers soft, slightly acidic water and benefits greatly from a nutrient-rich substrate. Regular supplementation of micronutrients is essential, with both root tabs and water column dosing playing an important role in maintaining healthy growth.

Directions

Plant directly into the substrate, ensuring the large root system is fully buried. This species prefers high lighting, so avoid placing it in shaded areas beneath hardscape or surrounding plants. With strong light and consistent CO₂, it will establish quickly and show steady growth. As a heavy root feeder, it benefits greatly from nutrient-rich substrates, regular water column fertilisation, and the use of root tabs.

Over time, the plant will produce multiple heads that naturally separate into individual plants, making propagation straightforward. Mature heads can be carefully split and replanted. In optimal conditions, the plant may even flower underwater.
