Description
Background

Hygrophila balsamica is a striking stem plant renowned for its deeply divided, lace-like foliage and vigorous growth. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it brings exceptional texture and movement to planted aquariums, making it a favourite for nature-style aquascapes and large background plantings. The finely dissected bright green leaves create a soft, feathery appearance that contrasts beautifully with broader-leaved plants and hardscape.

It is similar to Hygrophila odora, although balsamica is more leaf-shaped, and grows more like a rosette plant. It can be used both as a midground and background plant.

As with many Hygrophila species, Hygrophila balsamica is an excellent nutrient consumer, helping to improve aquarium stability by absorbing excess nutrients from the water column. It is hardy and easy to grow. Once established, it is relatively easy to maintain and grows impressive

Directions

Plant the stems in a bunch into the substrate. Once established, the plant will grow outwards quickly. This plant can tolerate some shading, and is flexible in terms of placement. A steady source of light and nutrients will be sufficient to grow it well. Higher light will bring out more red colouration.

To propagate, cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots readily.
