Description
Background

Hygrophila sp. ‘Chai’ is a rare and highly sought-after aquarium plant popularised by high-end aquascapers. It has delicate pastel pink, cream, and light green colouration. Its compact growth and uniquely patterned leaves make it a standout feature in any aquarium.

Unlike many traditional Hygrophila species, ‘Chai’ grows more compactly with smaller leaves and a softer overall appearance. Under strong lighting and stable conditions, the plant develops its best variegated tones.

Hygrophila sp. ‘Chai’ is considered more demanding than beginner stem plants and performs best in stable, nutrient-rich aquariums with injected CO₂. While it can survive in lower-tech setups, growth is usually slower, less compact, and colours may fade significantly.

Directions

Plant individual stems into nutrient-rich substrate with small spacing between each stem to allow light penetration and water flow. Avoid planting stems too densely at first.

Medium to high lighting is recommended, alongside regular fertilisation and stable CO₂ injection for best colour and compact growth. Trim frequently to encourage bushier growth and replant healthy tops as needed.
