Description
Background

Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) is a hardy aquarium moss with tiny green leaves carried along slender, branching shoots. It naturally grips wood, rocks and other surfaces, gradually forming soft cushions or loose tangles of growth. Its fine structure offers cover for fry and creates grazing surfaces for shrimp, making it useful in planted displays, breeding aquariums and shrimp tanks.

Compared with the drooping fronds of Weeping Moss, Java Moss has a looser, more irregular growth pattern. It is also more forgiving of warmer water and a wider range of conditions than many decorative mosses. Leave it lightly trimmed for a natural, overgrown appearance, or keep it short to reveal the contours of the hardscape.

Low to moderate lighting is sufficient, and injected CO₂ is optional. Regular liquid fertilisation can support fuller growth, while good circulation helps prevent debris collecting between the shoots. Attach it in thin layers so light and water can reach the inner growth. Trim regularly, thin out dense patches and siphon away loose fragments, which can settle elsewhere and start new clumps. Keep it from spreading over slower plants such as Anubias and Bucephalandra.

Directions

Rinse gently and divide into small portions, washing away all growing gel if supplied as tissue culture. Spread thin layers over driftwood or rock and secure with fine thread, fishing line or small dots of aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate gel. Keep the moss above the substrate. Once attached, trim to shape and reuse healthy pieces on other surfaces to create new patches.
