Description
Background

Ludwigia arcuata, commonly known as Needle Leaf Ludwigia, is an elegant stem plant distinguished by its exceptionally narrow, delicate leaves and beautiful orange to reddish colouration. Its fine foliage and graceful growth habit make it particularly attractive in nature-style aquascapes, where it provides a softer, more intricate texture than conventional broad-leaved stem plants.

Compared with Ludwigia repens, Ludwigia arcuata has considerably finer needle-like leaves, while Ludwigia repens produces broad, rounded leaves. It also shares some visual similarities with Rotala rotundifolia varieties, although its narrower leaves and distinctive copper-orange colouration give it a recognisable appearance.

Ludwigia arcuata is moderately demanding compared with more forgiving Ludwigia species. Although it can survive in simpler aquariums, strong lighting, stable CO₂ injection and consistent fertilisation are recommended for compact growth and intense colouration. Under favourable conditions, it grows at a moderate to fast pace and responds well to regular pruning.

Directions

Plant the stems in small groups to create a bushy effect in the tank. Weaker light will cause the shaded leaves to shed. Strong light, stable CO₂ and fertilisation promotes healthy, robust and colourful growth. Cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots readily. Regular topping and replanting maintains bushy form and prevents legginess.
