Description
Background

Ludwigia repens ‘Rubin’ is a striking red stem plant that is relatively easy to care for. Its broad oval leaves develop shades ranging from reddish-brown and burgundy through to intense ruby and wine red, providing an immediate splash of warm colour amongst green aquarium plants. The combination of strong colour and straightforward cultivation makes it an excellent introduction to red stem plants.

Growth is moderately slow, with upright stems producing pairs of closely spaced leaves. Regular trimming encourages side shoots and allows ‘Rubin’ to develop into dense, colourful bushes. It works particularly well through the midground and background, where groups of stems can be used to create strong blocks of red or provide contrast against bright green plants.

Ludwigia repens ‘Rubin’ can be grown without injected CO₂, although CO₂, good lighting, and consistent fertilisation encourage stronger growth, shorter internodes, and more intense colouration. Its adaptability makes it equally useful for newer planted aquarium keepers and experienced aquascapers looking for a dependable red plant.

Directions

Plant the stems in small groups to create a bushy effect in the tank. Weaker light will cause the shaded leaves to shed. Strong light, stable CO₂ and fertilisation promotes healthy, robust and colourful growth. Cut healthy tops and replant, and lower nodes will sprout side shoots readily. Regular topping and replanting maintains bushy form and prevents legginess.
