Description
Background

Nymphaea 'Maldonado' is a rare aquarium lily known for its large, red patterned leaves surface leaves. Originally popularised by ADA through their aquascapes, this plant has gained stardom and become somewhat of a holy grail.

Compared to more common aquarium lilies such as Nymphaea lotus 'Red' or Tiger Lotus, Maldonado is more unusual due to it possessing 2 distinct types of leaves. It has base leaves that are green, crinkled and patterned; and it has surface leaves that are heart-shaped and glowing red. Surface leaves develop stronger red colouration under higher light.

It is best suited to the midground or as a standout centrepiece in larger aquascapes. As a heavy root feeder, it benefits greatly from aquasoil or regular root tab supplementation. Stable conditions, regular fertilisation and careful pruning will keep the plant compact, colourful and healthy.

Directions

Plant roots firmly into the substrate and ensure fully buried. Try to choose a permanent placement for the plant, frequent relocation will slow down plant development.

Bright light and CO₂ will enhance its growth and boost the red colouration. Root tabs and good fertilisation will support healthy growth of plant. Baby bulbs will develop around its base, can be separated and replant when the bulb shoots mature. Floating leaves can be trimmed if not desired.

It is somewhat more finicky than typical water lilies, and prefers stable water conditions. If it undergoes large fluctuations or periods of stress, it may go dormant temporarily but will sprout again after a short period.
