Description
Background

Nymphaea zenkeri, commonly known as the Red Tiger Lotus, is one of the most iconic and rewarding aquarium plants available. Famous for its large patterned leaves, rapid growth, and striking colouration, it is often decorated with distinctive darker mottled markings that give the plant its "tiger" appearance.

Under favourable conditions, it can produce both submerged leaves and floating lily pads that reach the water surface. Mature specimens may even reward aquarists with beautiful flowers.

A nutrient-rich substrate greatly benefits long-term growth, as the plant feeds heavily through its roots. While CO₂ injection is not essential, it enhances leaf size, colour intensity, and overall vigour.

Directions

Plant the bulb partially into the substrate, leaving roughly one-third of the bulb exposed to prevent rotting. Position the plant in the midground or background with ample space for future growth. Provide medium to strong lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate supplemented with root tabs where necessary.

Remove floating leaves if a compact underwater form is preferred, as this encourages additional submerged growth. Trim older leaves regularly to maintain appearance and prevent excessive shading.
