Description
Background

Red Root Floaters (Phyllanthus fluitans) are among the most desirable floating plants in the aquarium hobby, known for their vibrant red roots, compact growth , and ability to develop stunning shades of orange, pink, and deep crimson under ideal conditions. Native to the slow-moving waters of South America, this attractive species brings both beauty and functionality to planted aquariums.

The plant produces small rounded leaves that float neatly across the water surface, while its characteristic red roots hang below, creating an attractive natural curtain effect. These roots provide shelter for shrimp, fry, and small fish, whilst also supporting beneficial microorganisms that contribute to a healthy aquarium ecosystem.

Under strong lighting, Red Root Floaters develop their most impressive colours. Leaves can transition from bright green to copper, orange, and deep red, making them one of the few floating plants capable of providing significant colour contrast. In lower light conditions they remain healthy but typically retain a greener appearance.

Directions

Place Red Root Floaters directly onto the aquarium surface and allow them to float freely. Provide moderate to strong lighting for the best red colouration and compact growth. Keep surface agitation relatively low, as excessive flow can damage leaves and hinder development.

Remove damaged or yellowing leaves as required. Ideal for shrimp tanks, breeding aquariums, nano aquascapes, and planted aquariums seeking natural surface cover and vibrant colour.
