Description
Background

Rotala indica ‘Bonsai’, often simply known as Rotala Bonsai, is a compact stem plant known for its dense growth, small rounded leaves, and ability to create bushes within an aquascape. Despite its common name, it is not a true Rotala species and is believed to be more closely related to Ammannia species. Regardless of classification, it has become a staple plant in the hobby.

The plant produces tightly spaced nodes with small, bright green leaves that grow in an orderly, upright fashion. Under strong lighting and favourable conditions, the shoot tips can develop subtle bronze, golden, or reddish hues. Its naturally compact growth habit allows it to create neat, trimmed hedges and miniature tree-like forms, making it particularly popular in Nature Aquarium and Iwagumi layouts. It grows relatively slowly.

While not especially difficult to grow, Rotala Bonsai performs best with stable fertilisation and good lighting. CO₂ injection is not essential but greatly improves compactness, growth rate, and overall health.

Directions

Plant individual stems into the substrate with small gaps between each stem to allow light penetration and encourage healthy root development. Provide medium to strong lighting and regular fertilisation for compact growth. CO₂ injection is recommended to achieve the tightest internodes and densest bush formation.

Trim regularly to maintain shape and encourage side shoots, creating fuller groups over time. Replant healthy cuttings if additional density is desired.
