Description
Background

Vallisneria spiralis is one of the most reliable and beginner-friendly aquarium plants available. Known for its long ribbon-like leaves, rapid growth, and exceptional adaptability, it has been a staple of the aquarium hobby for decades. Its graceful green foliage creates a natural underwater meadow effect, making it an excellent choice for background planting in both low-maintenance community aquariums and heavily planted aquascapes.

The plant grows as a rosette, producing narrow leaves that extend upwards towards the water surface. As it matures, Vallisneria spiralis spreads by runners, gradually forming dense colonies that provide shelter for fish, shrimp, and fry. This ability to spread naturally makes it highly effective for filling larger areas of the aquarium.

Directions

Plant Vallisneria spiralis directly into the substrate, ensuring the crown remains above the substrate surface to prevent rot. Provide low to moderate lighting and allow space for runners to spread naturally.

Nutrient-rich substrate or occasional root tab supplementation will support stronger growth. CO₂ injection is not required but can increase growth speed. Avoid burying the growing point and minimise frequent repositioning once planted. Remove excess runners if the plant spreads beyond the desired area.
